With Summer finally in sight and with the end of exams just around the corner, it’s time for us to announce our annual Summer send-off down at the Beaver Works! We are thrilled to announce that headlining the daytime element of the event will be the infamous Session Victim showcasing their high-octane bass-driven live show. Joining them on the Terrace will be much-vaunted up and coming live act Otzeki. In the main room, notorious acid fiends Paranoid London will be taking over, supported by Lyon’s favourite party starter, Kosme. On headlining duties in basement, we are very excited to welcome On Loop founder and NTS regular Moxie, alongside disco king Medlar and Flux’s very own Desert Sound Colony debuting his new live show. Paranoid London was born out of a desire to do things differently. Bored of how house music has developed, with vinyl hit so hard recently and labels desperate to do anything in order to sell a few records; they decided back in 2007 that the time was right for a brand new, old school acid label. They press on 180g vinyl, no downloads, no CDs and no promotion. It feels increasingly rare these days that a producer willingly hides behind the curtain as a way to focus attention upon the music they create: no promo and no nonsense is a policy exercised religiously by the duo. Using vintage synthesisers and outboard equipment to achieve the Paranoid London sound, Paranoid London manage to show respect to the diversity of acid’s beginnings while delivering dirty, brutal tracks without pandering to nostalgia.
Session Victim demonstrate a charming disregard for the boundaries of house music, and unleash an unparalleled energy behind the decks. This pair of devoted vinyl DJ’s from the small town of Lüneburg in Germany delve and dabble into everything from Disco to Soul to Hip Hop and back again, stamping their wild personalities on every performance, leaving a crowd of smiling faces in their path. The late James Brown aside, you won’t find anyone with a more visceral connection with soul than Session Victim in the midst of a DJ set. Their live set pitches the energy levels up even further, the frenzied head banging of two friends jamming like their lives depend on it, now a signature scene. Since the success of their bedroom-produced debut LP took them a little by surprise in 2012, Hauke Freer and Matthias Reiling have formalised their ad hoc studio jams and fanatical sampling sessions into something resembling a schedule. Besides that, refreshingly nothing much has changed about the friendship spanning two decades and a regular Hamburg to Berlin studio exchange. With their record collections spanning several decades of hip hop, funk and soul as well as frequently vinyl-only house and techno selections, it’s their passion for uncovering dusty vinyl treasures and the soul that can be captured on a miniature moment in wax that inspires both their DJ sets and production environment.
Moxie is many things: a Londoner born and bred, raised on raving and records; a seasoned DJ, playing big-room clubs and sweatbox basements worldwide; a charming radio host, as at home on national FM as regional stations and independent start-ups. It’s this balancing act between the underground and the mainstream that’s seen her become one of the UK’s hottest DJs. Starting out covering for Sinden’s Kiss FM show in 2010, Moxie began guesting on pirate radio station Rinse and regularly DJing on the London club circuit. Her DJing experiences have been as broad and ambitious as her tastes. Moxie’s selections of house, techno, disco and garage have seen her reach such wide and varying audiences that she became so in demand, the legendary super-club fabric invited her to play their Room One no less than six times in 2014. Moxie may be at home in the club, but she also shines on the airwaves. Throughout this mainstream exposure, though, she’s remained loyal to her independent roots. After landing her own show on east London’s NTS Radio in 2011, she’s been hosting the same slot ever since and has been heavily involved in the station’s development. Her work includes hosting in-depth interviews under the title ‘Moxie Presents’, inviting legends such as Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier and newcomers Lapsley and Formation onto the show. As well as six-hour takeovers with renowned guest DJs, she also programmes and hosts special broadcasts around the world on behalf of NTS Radio, including the 2014 Red Bull Music Academy in Tokyo. At the start of 2016, Moxie announced the launch of 'On Loop.' A nomadic club night and record label with dates confirmed in London, Glasgow, Manchester, Paris, Lyon, Glastonbury Festival and beyond. On the label side of this On Loop is set to become a physical outlet for selected cuts taken from the 'Moxie Presents' compilation series. With her talent for selecting and promoting quality music, Moxie’s ascent to the top is as smooth as it is earned.
Over the past few years Medlar has slowly but surely been putting together pieces of his own puzzle of a musical career and gaining fans and attention from all the right people one step at a time. His raw and emotive take on production has laid solid foundations with tracks such as Terrel, gaining recognition and support from tastemakers including Floating Points and Dj Nature to name a few. His quality and calculated output has lead to support on radio with plays on Radio 1, 6 Music and he regularly guest mixes on Rinse FM. In the early days, Ned Pegler (Medlar) also worked on developing his alias Klic, remixing and producing more UK and 2 step leaning sounds for his own record label Hit and Hope whilst studying in Brighton. Since moving to Peckham the Medlar project has gone from strength to strength with regular output for Wolf Music Recordings. In 2012 his first EP The Sun was released which also included Knockard Pearl which received credit from many acclaimed people in the know. Alongside this release his demand as a remixer has become acclaimed through his reworks of Disclosure and Tensnake and as well as for labels such as Needwant and Tsuba. A first for both Medlar and Wolf Music, October 2013 saw the release of a full length LP Sleep, a 10 track schooling in sampling with one track flowing to the next creating almost more of a mix tape solely produced by him. A full-length film accompanied the record making it into a soundtrack. The release of the album and excitement surrounding it led to a full European tour at the end of 2013 and an Australian tour in January of 2014. Off the back of the success of the Sleep LP, Wolf Music released a well received four track Sleep Remixes 12” in March 2014. The release included 12” mixes of Tides and Tap Spring as well as remixed from Boston’s Kon and Greymatter respectively. Medlar’s then went on to release his highly anticipated remix of Arthur Beatrice ‘Late’, which was featured on the IS050 blog. His production has continued to impress, with a string of acclaimed edits and original productions in recent months.
With exceptional energy and unique character, Kosme shares his vision of house and techno with every single crowed. His sets are full of passion and a contagious groove, with his eclectic influences being refined to modern tastes. 2013 saw Kosme start touring across Europe, from the underground clubs in Berlin to some of the most prestigious festivals. He stays deeply attached to his hometown, where he launched the successful Cosmic Adventure club night at Le Sucre and where he held the rank of resident DJ with the likes of Laurent Garnier or Agoria. This monthly residency allowed him to invite the artists whom he admires like Theo Parrish, Mr G or Move D to please a notably discerning public. Kosme has won production plaudits for 'April Moon', his hit on Thema Records, and also for a superb remix of Agoria’s 'For One Hour'. Both opened new doors and introduced his sound to a wider audience. 2014 was also the start of a new journey with Cosmic Ad Records coming to life, a label aiming to be an open-minded logbook of his ever-expanding universe. The last year was equally successful with festival bookings, radio shows, a Boiler Room session with Laurent Garnier, Mixmag Lab and regular sets in Berlin’s Panorama Bar, Thuishaven, Dekmantel and Robert Johnson giving Kosme the chance to show his skills. Record-wise, he did a remix for Dancing With Quagmire and up next will be an EP with his production/DJ partner and friend, Konstantin Sibold.
Having blazed a trail with a fistful of well received singles and a compelling live show, Otzeki herald the release of their debut album “Binary Childhood” with a new single ‘Pay The Tax’’ now online. Otzeki is a project built around balance and duality. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the yin and yang of its members, cousins Mike Sharp (vocal, guitar) and Joel Roberts (keys, Ableton). In 2014 they experienced separate, but synchronised, spiritual awakenings in Berlin. They had ventured to the Techno capital separately, both unaware that that they were there the same week and even at the same club on the same night. They began a near scholarly exploration of electronic artists, taking in the work of Ricardo Villalobos and Rhadoo along with his Romanian influences and preoccupation for a more sound design based approach to composition. The result is their uncompromising debut LP, Binary Childhood. It’s an album driven by rhythm, that takes their previous use of electronic loops and infuses them with more organic sounds and live percussion.
Created in the isolation of the British countryside, Desert Sound Colony is inspired by faintly remembered sounds and almost forgotten memories. The thread running through the melodic, visceral tracks touch on a sense of melancholy present within us all. Occupying a space somewhere between ‘60s Psychedelia and the pulsating sounds of future-clubs, Desert Sound Colony is both infectious and ethe… Created in the isolation of the British countryside, Desert Sound Colony is inspired by faintly remembered sounds and almost forgotten memories.
