Valentine's Day SUCKS, amiright? Wanna slate your ex? Share your heartbreak? Tell us about your Tinder experience? Come thru 4 a specially themed Word of Mouth open mic (sign-ups on arrival and throughout the night if you're feeling spontaneous). The 2nd half of the night will be our Slam of the North Pre-slam!!! See details and rules below…
The audience makes the atmosphere so come along to speak or just to listen. Poetry slams are a hype kinda thing so get ready for some seriously bangin poetry! Bring your mates, and your mates' mates — there is space for everyone!
WHO WE ARE:
LUU Spoken Word Society is here for all you poets, rappers, storytellers and songwriters searching for a space to share your scribbles on stage — any style, any language, anything! Leeds has an awesome poetic heritage that our generation of students can get excited about and carry on. It's important your voices are heard! Spoken word is whatever you want it to be so come along and make it your own! We would also like to extend a warm welcome to any and all international students that would like to join us. Perform poetry in your native language, we're all ears!
Entry as usual £1 for members, £2 for non-members. Membership costs only £3 (purchased on the union website) and will give you discounted entry to all our future events, subsidised tickets on trips or talks we may run, and priority in appearing on our film series and radio show. Membership also allows you to join our exclusive performers group for all the info on performance opportunities throughout the year!
NOTE: We operate a zero tolerance policy on all forms of prejudiced behaviours both ON AND OFF THE STAGE, including — but not limited to — racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, ableism. We also ask that if your performance material contains any potentially upsetting or triggering content that you use an appropriate Trigger Warning at the start of your set. If you or anyone you know experiences any kind of behaviour at our events that makes you feel uncomfortable, please know you are welcome to talk to the committee in confidence, and we will do all we can to help!
— Time limit 3 minutes. This starts from the moment you open your mouth and includes all rambly introductions. If you go over 3 minutes, you are given a 10 second grace period but for every 10 seconds after that, you will lose 1 point.
— No props, backing music or musical instruments!
— The poems must be your own original work!
— 5 judges will be chosen at random from the audience and will give every poet a score out of 10, based on writing skill, performance and audience reaction. The highest and lowest scores are removed (we've all got grudges/idols) and you end up with a score out of 30. Any time penalties will be deducted from this overall score.
— And by mathematical certainty and absolutely no subjectivity, the best poet wins!
The top 5 scored performers will make up our team for Slam of the North, Saturday 10th March 2018 in the Riley Smith Theatre! This is an inter-university slam (not exclusive to students!!) started by our Society last year which we hope to make an annual event in the LUU calendar.
