Alpine cheese is the product of a very special part of the world. The Alps offer rich pastures only some months of the year — cows are herded to the grassy uplands, then taken back to the valleys when the snows come. Typically, these cheeses are made from milk gathered from different farms during the pasture season from June to September, and made into wagon-wheel-size cheeses. This large format allows a longer shelf life and gives the cheese some stability during its journey down from the mountains. But there are some other types of cheese that qualify as Alpine.
We have chosen a eight great Alpines for you to taste – all that show the variety and nutty gorgeousness of these cheeses.
Prepare yourself because we will also be doing some melting (Alpines are the best to melt!)
As usual it will be served with all the trimmings, local breads, crackers, chutneys etc.
