Mark Lapore & Ruchir Joshi

The first screening presents three perspectives on Kolkata, a city whose name was anglicised to Calcutta during the British Imperial period, then officially changed to it’s Bengali pronunciation in 2001.

Commissioned by Channel 4, Ruchir Joshi’s film Tales From Planet Kolkata mocks how the city has been depicted by the western gaze of foreign filmmakers, whilst simultaneously paying homage to their work. “Calcutta was the supermarket of sad images, the go-to place to depict doom. I wanted to change that perception. I wanted to show that Calcutta was not just about black holes, beggars and lepers”

In his 16mm films The Glass System and Kolkata, the late American experimental filmmaker and documentarian Mark Lapore confronts the tangled relationship between ethnography and individual subjectivity as he observes the ebb and flow of humanity on the streets of Kolkata

Tales From Planet Kolkata (Ruchir Joshi, 1993, 38 min)

The Glass System (Mark Lapore, 2000, 20 min)

Kolkata (Mark Lapore, 2005, 35 min)
+ excerpt from Dreams and Apparitions of Mark Lapore (Saul Levine, 2006/7, c.12 min)
