Following the success of the 1st 6 week course, we're delighted to launch the next Life Drawing Course at Chirpy
If you've ever fancied trying your hand at Life Drawing this 6 week course offers an exploration into the various techniques and methods used to depict the human figure. The classes will be relaxed and friendly and although the course is aimed at beginners all levels are welcome to come along!
What will you do?
You will work with a life model
Each of the 6 sessions will focus on a different subject, for example: quick gestural drawings, chiaroscuro (the study of light and dark tonal values), measured drawing or negative space.
You’ll use different drawing materials, including pencil, charcoal, graphite and chalk
You’ll learn to draw from observation, from a range of short and long, model poses
You’ll gain an understanding of the materials you use
You’ll use measuring to improve the proportion of your drawings
You’ll learn to create effective compositions
What will you make?
You’ll produce line drawings and tonal drawings. In some sessions you might do lots of quick drawings and in others you may produce just one or two longer drawings
Who is this course for?
The course is suitable for complete beginners or those with some experience who wish to hone their skills. No previous knowledge is required
If you have had previous experience and wish to come along to 1 or more of these sessions to practice untutored, then this option is available at a drop-in cost of £20 / sesssion — you will need to bring your own materials
What do you need to bring?
We will provide materials however you can bring your own sketch book (at least A3 size) and a selection of drawing materials (e.g. a range of pencils, charcoal, white chalk and a putty eraser)
Who will your tutor be?
Tessa Houghton is a professional artist and experienced art tutor. She also teaches landscape and oil painting courses. She spent 12 years living and working in Barcelona until returning to England 4 years ago. She now lives in Chapel Allerton and is a studio holder at East Street Arts.

The course will take place in the upstairs workshop space in Chirpy. All attendees will be able to get 10% off in store during the course dates (except on Artist in Residence work)
