As part of the 2017 Scalarama programme we have banded together with Left Bank Leeds and the Hebden Bridge Picture House to present three stunning examples of the City Symphony genre; Man with a Movie Camera (23rd September at Hebden Bridge), Alex Barrett’s brand new London Symphony (28th September at Left Bank) and for our part we couldn’t resist Walter Ruttmann’s glorious ode to Berlin.
Preceding The Man With A Movie Camera by two years Vertoz and Ruttman were actually contemporaries much inspired by each other’s work. As with each of the city symphonies Ruttman’s film is both a stunning piece of avant-garde filmmaking and an incredible record of a city which, in this case, would soon be engulfed by the harrowing rise of National Socialism and the eventual bombing raids of World War II which would result in the levelling of over 30% of central Berlin.
This screening will feature live piano accompaniment from Darius Battiwala.
Screening part of Scalarama Leeds 2017.
