— Born in 1991 James Wilson studies with Karin de Fleyt at the University of Leeds, and previously studied with Dr Martyn Shaw at Leeds College of Music.
James has participated in masterclasses with the Apollo Saxophone Quartet, Wissam Boustany, Belinda Gough, Kevin Gowland-Mahon, Kate Hill, Mike Mower, and Ian Mullin. He was a previous beneficiary of the Oxford Flute Summer School Bursary.
As a soloist James has premiered Ambrose Field’s Quantaform Series I-XX, and has performed Dai Fujikura’s Poison Mushroom and Robert Bentall’s Illegal to Die for Nonclassical. His arrangement of Fauré’s Pavane for flute and string quartet has been performed live on BBC Radio 4.
Awards include the East Coast Young Musician of the Year, Harrogate Competitive Festival for Music, Speech and Drama, and the Mrs Sunderland Music Festival.
James has contributed two articles to the British Flute Society journal: The Performance History of Carl Nielsen’s Flute Concerto in Britain (November 2016); A History of New Music for Flute at the Proms (July 2016).
He is a Fellow of the Victoria College of Music in flute teaching.
