SAM GLEAVES; Born and raised in Wythe County in southwest Virginia, Sam Gleaves performs innovative mountain music with a sense of history.
2016 saw him make his UK debut with his new album and single Ain’t We Brothers as well as supporting Peggy Seeger on UK dates. He made quite an impact, with BBC Folk radio support from all around the UK and he has just completed a print feature interview for the next issue of Rock n Reel magazine. Mike Harding hailed the album as “One of the most beautiful albums I have heard in the last ten years”. Rock n Reel magazine said "...as fine an album of contemporary Appalachian style folk as you will hear in many a long year"

The single is released via Red Eye in late Feb.
Under the direction of local teacher and barber Jim Lloyd, Sam took up stringband instruments as a teenager, including the banjo, guitar, fiddle, autoharp and dulcimer. With his mentor ballad singer Sheila Kay Adams, Sam found his voice and fell in love with the mountain love songs, which he carries into his generation with pride. Sam’s performances combine traditional Appalachian ballads, dance tunes, original songs and the stories that surround the music.
Sam earned a degree in Folklore from Berea College and performed for four years with the Berea College Bluegrass Ensemble, directed by Al White. With that band and as a solo artist, Sam has toured extensively, performing at U.S. venues such as Mountain Stage and the Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour, and abroad in Ireland, England, Canada and Japan. Sam writes new songs in the Appalachian tradition, telling stories about love, the home place, working people and present social issues in the mountains. Sam’s music has been featured by National Public Radio, Kentucky Educational Television, No Depression, The Bluegrass Situation, KEXP, Exclaim!, Sing Out!, The Bitter Southerner, and Still Journal.
Ain’t We Brothers was Sam's debut record of original songs, released in the US in November, 2015. Produced by Cathy Fink, AIN’T WE BROTHERS also features guest artists Janis Ian, Tim O’Brien, Laurie Lewis, Marcy Marxer, Tyler Hughes and others.
“If a remake of ‘O, Brother!’ is made some decades from now, it is quite likely that Sam Gleaves will be standing where Ralph Stanley stood."
Gaye Adegbalola, Blues Woman, Blues Music Award Winner.
«Courageous as hell and country to the bone. Varied, intelligent, moving…these songs stay with you.»
Lee Smith, novelist, Queen of Appalachian Literature
“A stunning first album... surprising from a 23 year-old still refreshingly wet behind his commercial ears. I keep very few albums that I’m given. This one’s a keeper.”
Peggy Seeger, Folk Singer and Songwriter.

REGGIE AND THE KRAYFISH. Came into being in late 2015 when Paul Sheppard and Mike Shillabeer joined forces again following their collaboration n bands in the 1970s and 80s. Reggie and the Krayfish play mostly roots and blues influenced material with guitars in different tunings with slide guitar and harmonica accompaniment. The band uses vocal harmony to great effect. Cliff Speight joined the band in Summer 2016 and they have been working as a three-piece outfit until joined by Paul’s daughter Maeve Sheppard who has added another voice to their already strong vocal delivery.
