West Yorkshire was the first place to have industrial waterways, and they were the key to the industrial revolution. Mike Clarke will look at the development of these waterways, and especially those in the Calder Valley, through maps and photos, and put their development into a national and international perspective. Mike is best known for his research into northern waterways. Did you know that Halifax was a centre for canal engineers it the 18th century? Find out more during the talk. Suggested age 12+

Mike has been researching waterway history for almost fifty years, and has travelled extensively across Europe and to China as part of his research. His most recent books are a history of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, and the history of the compartment boats on the Aire & Calder Navigation.
