2017 marks the 10th year of the Leeds Waterfront Festival on the 24th and 25th June and the waterside community will be coming together to celebrate…
To mark the festival’s 10th anniversary there will be a rather special celebration at this year’s Leeds Waterfront Festival, we will be hosting an really exciting event and attempting a brand new world record for the ‘largest ever paper boat race’ in the world!
We will be inviting the community of Leeds and beyond to join us in this history-making record-breaking event. Over festival weekend, workshops will be held at both The Tetley and Armley Industrial Museum, where members of the public can make a colourful paper boat to be included in the race to be held in the city centre as the grand finale to another wonderful celebration of Leeds Waterfront. 250 is the number to beat so come down and be part of it!
This will be a memorable new World Record Title for the Leeds Waterfront Festival and Leeds as a whole and is generously supported by Leeds Civic Trust.
The paper boats will be numbered and recorded during the community workshops and will then be transported to the race location to be put under starters orders! People will be able to cheer on the race from the side of the river and a nearby bridge. There will be prizes for the first 3 boats across the finish line and a chance to go down in the history books too!
Boat building workshops will take place on the 24th and 25th June before to the race. On Saturday 24th June, a boat building workshop will be held at Armley Industrial Museum from 11am – 2pm and on Sunday 25th June at The Tetley from 11am – 2pm. Boats can also be made at home and entered in to the race on the day. Downloadable entry packs will be available for this, check out the festival website for further information and instructions here.
The race will take place at 3.30pm on the 25th June at Granary Wharf.
